Where Human Sexuality, Sexual Offending and the Law Collide
Our two speakers will be addressing the intersection of Human Sexuality, Sexual offending,
and the South African Criminal Justice system.
Dr Kalisky will looking at how personality disorders and patterns of aberrant sexual behaviour
are dealt with within the Criminal Justice system, and how the clinical expert can make
management recommendations and assist jurist bodies in their deliberation.
Maryam Abbas, will be unpicking the complex challenge of balancing out the sometimes
conflicting elements of legislation, human rights and the rehabilitation of people with
intellectual disability who commit sexual offences within a South African Psychiatric Forensic
setting.
Associate Professor Sean Kalisky is the Head of the Forensic Mental Health Services
Valkenberg, Associate Professor at the Department of Psychiatry University of Cape Town
and Senior Consultant Psychiatrist at Valkenberg Hospital. He is head of the Forensic
Psychiatry Unit, Valkenberg Hospital and Program Manager of the Forensic Psychiatric
Services Western Cape.
Maryam Abbas is a clinical psychologist with the division of Forensics, Valkenberg, Senior
Lecturer at the University of Cape Town, with a specialist interest in the area of intellectual
disability.
